海洋; 半咸淡水 居于水底的; 深度上下限 15 - ? m. 亚热带的; 43°N - 20°N, 107°W - 143°W 砂泥底、河口、近海沿岸、泻湖、礁沙混合区 黑鲷是鲷科家族中对水质的容忍性最强的鱼类，但其性敏感多疑，警戒性强，会以尾鳍挖土，行动极为敏捷。属于温、热带沿岸杂食性底栖鱼类，喜栖于砂泥底之内湾水域，有时会进入河口区域。以底栖甲壳类、软体动物、棘皮动物及多毛类为食。雌雄同体，且会性转变，在3-4岁前全为雄性，其后才转变为雌性。
